This set depicts a scene in book number six, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, where Harry and the Weasley family have gathered for Christmas but find themselves under attack from two of Lord Voldemort’s death Eaters. Bellatrix Lestrange and Fenrir Greyback, the two main DeathEaters are featured in this set and it is the first time either have been featured as Lego minifigures.

The figures are all amazing, well designed and intricately detailed, and most have two expressions on their heads. The house itself is represented by a naturally haphazard three level structure as well as a pig pen and a fire that can transport figures by Flu Powder. Lego have used a nice color scheme on the house, with the majority of the structure using dark red and brown with white and light blue highlights. Each floor has a separate room, with two bedrooms and a kitchen area being the main detailed areas.

Regardless of what people think of the house, it is the figures that will attract fans and this set is sure to be a hit ahead of the seventh movie’s release in November.

Lego’s Duplo Toy Story wave of sets for younger builders is recommended for ages three and above and is aimed squarely at younger builders with small hands but big imaginations. Duplo pieces are larger than the regular Lego brick, and so easier to fix to one another. Overall the sets are smaller in piece count if not in overall size. Each Duplo set comes with two inch action figures that can interact with the elements in the set, carrying implements and standing securely on the studs that make Lego such an effective construction toy.

In the Pizza Planet Truck set which features Buzz and a Little Green Alien, kids can also play with the truck, take it apart and build their own design. With the two largest sets the sky is the limit.

The Alien Space Crane comes with Woody, a little green Alien and Buzz Lightyear. Kids can use the garbage truck with the crane and extra building pieces to create any story situation their mind can handle. The back of the garbage truck comes off so the vehicle can become a car or even a space ship. With 23 pieces of large Duplo blocks the set is a great addition to already existing Duplo collections or the start of a new one.

The Great Train Chase comes with Jessie, Woody and Buzz and also a train engine and carriage as well as enough bricks to build a tunnel for the train to go through. As with all Duplo bricks, the train carriages come off their bases so kids can customise the designs and create their own boxcars or cabooses. At 39 pieces this is the largest set and comes with the core Toy Story figures so is sure to be a hit. The diversity of bricks and the cool train allow for hours and hours of creation.

Duplo teaches kids hand eye coordination and creative design and kids are drawn to them for many years. Combining Duplo with Toy Story ensures these sets will be around in your family for generations.

Like other sets in this series the model is made to fit along a main street diorama, so the building comes complete with a segment of shiny sidewalk out the front. Its a beautiful looking building, no surprises there, and it is nice to see a Lego station that isn’t all windows or open spaces as the regular line tends to be.

This is the first set of this kind to also feature a vehicle, in this case a fire engine modelled after a 1930′s fire truck. Like all the modular buildings the set is designed so that the roof and each successive floor is detachable so you can access each level of the station to play and customise.

Like the Green Grocer before it, this set has the beginning of playability inside with a ping pong table for bored firemen to bide their time and a fully stocked fridge in the kitchen. Other details include fire-fighting tools, racks for the firemen’s helmets, a fire-pole, couch, bookshelf and a roof with a water tower and bell.

The set measures 14″ (35 cm) high and 10″ (25 cm) wide and with over 2200 pieces it is recommended for building by ages 16+. As with most sets in Lego’s range, experienced younger builders could build this with a little patience and consideration. If you have the other modular sets its a great addition but would happily serve as the first one on your new Main Street.

The All Terrain Tactical Enforcer is a walker that was developed to support the Grand Army of the republic and became the precursor to later walkers including the AT-AT. Lego’s version of the walker is impressive and comes with a STAP vehicle that the separatist battle droids rode in the Clone Wars movie to battle AT-TE walkers on Teth.

The walker model measures 15′ 1/2″ (39cm) long and 8″ (20cm) high and playable features include positionable legs that spring back to position, movable cannons, firing missiles, armored hatches and cockpit that open to reveal the cabin and troop bay inside.

The top panels lift up and troopers can sit inside while the cockpit can be opened to place in a single figure. Another gunner can sit on the top to rotate the cannon and behind him there is a small handle that can be used to pick up the vehicle or attach it to the Dropship (set 10195).

The minifigures include Anakin Skywalker and his padawan Ahsoka Tano, Jabba The Hutt’s son Rotta, Clone Captain Rex, a regular clone and a battle droid. The Commander Rex is exclusive and has not appeared in a set since.

While not quite as playable as the Republic Gunship it has a lot of character and young fans will enjoy replicating the scenes from the TV series. It looks good as a display model and will fit well into battle scenes and dioramas.

Coming in at 1204 pieces and with two astronaut minifigures that can sit in the cockpit, the Shuttle Adventure was created as a Lego Designer exclusive in 2010 to commemorate NASA’s decommissioning of the Space Shuttle this year.

The shuttle itself is 17.5″ (44cm) tall and 10″ (25.5cm) wide from wing tip to wing tip and comes with retractable landing gear and an opening cockpit and cargo bay. Two detachable solid rocket boosters and a large fuel tank attach to the underneath of the shuttle as it stands ready on the launch pad and a satellite can be deployed from the cargo bay using the inbuilt cargo bay arm. Finally a ground service vehicle carries around a technical support crewperson to attend to final countdown tasks.

The designers of the Lego Shuttle have put a lot of thought into this, probably the last, version of the space shuttle and it shows. From the playability of the model to its numerous design features including the way the shuttle demonstrates a forward sloping angle when sitting on its deployed landing gear, the shuttle is a joy to build, play with and display.

With such a large piece count younger fans should note that it is recommended for ages 16+ but as with most sets of this size, experience counts for a lot. If kids have had regular experience with Lego then the 16+ age recommendation won’t hold much weight. The Space Shuttle Adventure Lego set retails for $99US and is highly recommended.
